Book: Bee Season, Book: Little White Lies, Book: Man of My Dreams, Cosplay, Curtis Sittenfield, Gemma Townley, Jin Joson, JTA, Meg Cabot, Myra Goldberg, Sophie Kinsella, The Sims
It’s been TWO WEEKS since my last post. It was an extremely confusing two weeks, what with the results of the JTA rankings (I did not fare well, unfortunately) and a whole bunch of other things, both good and bad.
But anyway, I’m back! And I’ll clue you in on what has been occuring (not in school though, as I have erased it all from my brain. XD)
- The Sims - Yes, the computer game. I played the entire collection, including all the expansion packs. I keep building all these houses for the people to live in, but in the end, I get tired of taking care of them.
- Cosplay! – NO, I’m not cosplaying. I’m more like looking at pictures of people who cosplay, and I have to say, Filipino cosplayers are incredible. They really put a lot of effort into their work. Not that I’ve seen cosplayers from other countries, but I can’t imagine anything better than the work of local cosplayers. AND one of my favorites is Jin Joson (http://behindinfinity.deviantart.com) who apparently studies in UP Diliman and he/she (because it is actually unclear. he/she is that good. I’m actually kind of desperate to know if Jin’s a he or a she, but I have a really strong feeling that she’s a girl. But then again, I might just be biased.
) has done all sorts of characters, ranging from Naruto to Kenshin to female characters such as Sakura of Naruto. It is so cool, I swear. You have to see it.
I am so obsessed, I’m scaring myself.
I’ve also gotten around to readings a few books:
- Queen of Babble by Meg Cabot – I bought this book hardbound for only P300 in a booksale in school (They’re from UP, apparently. Zeitgeist?). The book isn’t as nice as other Meg Cabot books, but it’s fun and light, and it makes me happy.
- Man of My Dreams by Curtis Sittenfield – Not as light as Meg Cabot, definitely, but I like this significantly better than Curtis Sittenfield’s (not sure about the spelling) first novel Prep which was rather… disturbing. This one is nice and sweet, and talks about love in a much deeper sense. It follows a girl named Hannah through her many relationships with the men in her life, and how she tries to find true love. The ending is sweet and touching, and makes you realize what love is really all about.
- Little White Lies by Gemma Townley – The cover of this book said that Sophia Kinsella thought the book was “Fabulous!” and “Poignant and funny.” and a whole bunch of other nice comments. So I borrowed it from the library. It wasn’t really that good though, then I realized (through the help of Wikipedia) that Gemma Townley is actually Sophie Kinsella’s sister… The book was okay. Standard chick lit fare, although less funny and less engaging (and a less annoying MC) than Sophie Kinsella’s books.
- Bee Season by Myra Goldberg – Another disturbing book (when I talk about disturbing, I’m actually talking only about one thing, and it’s not violence or horror because if you remember, I actually enjoy reading about violence and horror because they are less scary on paper than on the TV screen) that talks about family life and religion. It’s been made into a movie starring Richard Gere and some famous actress whose name I have forgotten. I actually read this book months ago, and I just remembered that I haven’t reviewed it in my blog. The book talks about a Jewish family that was falling apart and the individual members just want to feel that they belong. The story is quite touching and fascinating as it speaks of some things that border on the spiritual yet it remains grounded and real so that the readers know and feel along with the characters. The characters are well fleshed out and you can really get to know them, get to see through their eyes and understand what they are going through. It’s a great book, and worth reading, but only if you’re mature enough to handle adult themes.
Anyway, that’s all I have for now. I WILL update soon. We get to choose JTA destinations tomorrow. Pray for me!
Summer break is so close… yet so far. (Because of the finals and the projects and papers and stuff. Sigh.)
